Join us on Friday, September 6th from 6-10 p.m. to explore what’s brewing along the Jordan River, enjoy delicious brewed beverages, and learn about exciting new community projects. Our activities will run from 6-8 p.m., featuring yoga, herbal crown making, and pot painting. Plus, don’t miss the special performance of Tarotville by Curbside Theater! 🎭

Nature and Health Community Fair
In collaboration with University Neighborhood Partners and with the support of Salt Lake City’s ACE Fund, Nature and Human Health Utah is hosting the first-ever Nature and Health Community Fair on July 30th at the Northwest Recreation Center. This event aims to showcase the diverse ways to embrace nature, spotlight organizations enhancing outdoor access, and promote the health benefits of being outside. Activities include an outdoor movement class, a plant potting tutorial, kids' arts and crafts, and insights from nature and health organizations in SLC. This fair is perfect for anyone interested in learning about the health benefits of nature and discovering various ways to interact with the natural world around us beyond hiking and camping, such as watching sunsets, nurturing houseplants, or drawing natural spaces.

Ashley Cleveland (Outdoor Auntie) - Ashley is an ecologist turned city planner whose expertise focuses on equity, representation and designing solutions for underserved communities.
Crystal Chen (Save Our Canyons) - Crystal is an advocate for public lands conservation who worked for years doing geospatial analysis and science communication for national parks.
Muskan Walia (Utah Youth Environmental Solutions) - Muskan is a student activist who has successfully advocated for local school districts to commit to 100% clean energy transitions.
Matthew Fry (University of Utah) - Matthew is an environmental geography professor whose research examines human-environment topics through a political ecology lens.
Jerry Lee (University of Utah) - Jerry is a social and environmental justice researcher focused on park access, outdoor rec, subjective wellbeing and more.
Come learn about their important work, mingle with other engaged community members, and enjoy some light bites and refreshments!

Illuminate Nature: An Evening Walk with NHH-UT

It's easy to get into a routine of staying inside and relaxing during the dark and cold winter months, but we challenge you to get outside, connect to nature, and support your health and well-being.
Join us for an evening in Red Butte Canyon with Kate Magargal, anthropologists and professor in the University of Utah's Dark Sky Studies Minor program. Kate also teaches around the topic of human health and nature in the dark skies classroom.

Air Quality Mixer
A new working group on human networks and data science, spurred from the Interdisciplinary Exchange for Utah Science (NEXUS) and the Data Science and Ethics of Technology (DATASET) Initiative, is hosting an air quality mixer on November 6, 2023 from 3-5pm in 2950 Gardner Commons. Join us to learn about diverse perspectives on air quality from our panelists, including Amanda Bakian (Research Associate Professor of Psychiatry), Heather Holmes (Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering), Daniel Mendoza (Research Assistant Professor, Atmospheric Sciences), and Nalini Nadkarni (Professor of Biological Sciences). After the panel discussion, we will have a session of speed networking where you will have a chance to meet one-on-one with other researchers interested in the science, impacts, and threats of air quality. Finally, we will wrap up with a group discussion on where we go from here.
NHH UT at BYU
Join us on October 19th from 4-5pm for a presentation from Nature and Human Health Utah (NHH UT)! During this session, NHH UT will introduce their group and their impact thus far, provide historical context, and delve into the multifaceted health benefits associated with connecting with nature, encompassing physical, mental, social, and spiritual components. Additionally, NHH UT will share findings from a recent landscape assessment, offering insights into the current state of the work that’s being done and how to move forward in order to increase equitable access to the outdoors and thus improve health outcomes in Utah.
NHH UT Research and Networking Symposium
Join us for Nature and Human Health UT’s first ever Symposium! To kickstart the Symposium, we will be hearing from our Keynote Speaker, State Representative Rosemary Lesser, who will be discussing her work as a medical doctor and policy maker and the role the legislature can play in advancing the field of nature and human health. Additionally, the work from NHH UT’s four pilot grant recipients will be highlighted through a short presentation on their work, the progress they have made, and the results of their projects. During lunch, which will be provided, NHH UT will announce our upcoming pilot grants and the requirements to submit a proposal. The event will end with a networking activity in which we will be highlighting community organizations working in the field of nature and health.
NHH UT Membership Meeting
NHH UT is excited to share our upcoming membership meeting on September 5th from 5:30-7pm at Wasatch Community Garden’s Green Phoenix Farm. This event will highlight nature and health in practice as we learn from Wasatch Community Gardens and their efforts and collaboration with U of U Researchers to promote health and wellbeing to women facing and experiencing homelessness through their Green Team program.

February Membership Meeting with Lincoln Larson and Jay Maddock
Lincoln Larson, Ph.D.,is an Associate Professor in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management at NC State University. His work is designed to understand and promote positive interactions between humans and nature, covers a range of themes including natural resource management and conservation, environmental education and stewardship, and connections between outdoor recreation, health and well-being. Lincoln will be presenting on “Next steps in nature-based health promotion: What have we learned from the COVID-19 pandemic?

Jay Maddock, PhD, FAAHB, is a professor in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the School of Public Health at Texas A&M University. He is the Co-Director of the Center for Health & Nature and serves on the Brazos County Board of Health. Jay will introduce the Center for Health and Nature and the work they've done including those they've partnered with, their findings with land access, and valuable insight about what's worked, and what hasn't worked with efforts to make nature accessible to a wide range of the community.
December Member Meeting with Carlos Andres Gallagos-RioFrio (Copy)
We are excited to welcome a guest speaker from the University of Vermont’s Gund Institute of the Environment. Carlos Andres works with indigenous populations in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia to bring new and critical understanding to connections between nature and mental health among populations that are typically overlooked by research, which has been focused in urban Western societies. He draws upon a decade of interdisciplinary experience with community leaders, governments, non-governmental organizations and international organizations in Ecuador, Australia, and the U.S. Below is the abstract of the recent paper that Dr. Gallegos RioFrio co-authored.
We will also hear brief progress reports on two of the ongoing pilot projects that are supported by NHH-UT.
And we will briefly discuss plans for a new award for NHH-UT from the REI Cooperative Action Fund.

NHH Speaker Series - Florence Williams
Please join us for the third speaker in the inaugural University of Utah Nature and Health Speaker Series! Florence Williams, author of The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes us Happier, Healthier and More Creative, and Heartbreak: A Personal and Scientific Journey will speak on Tuesday, April 12 at 4pm (MDT) on Zoom. Ms Williams will share her insights on the research she has done about the links between nature and human health, and field questions from the audience.
